Guys, what I could not STAND with this application is the 10-page limit. Cutting here, adding there, just a word or two changing the whole equilibrium it was insane!
While it is annoying at first, the limit helps you in formulating your research concisely. I know people who, if you would let them write without limits, would write 50 pages or so rambling on. For reviewers, the more concise your proposal, the more positive they will be.

Agree, but it's too packed?? And single-spaced. And 11 font.

For the 36 month CAR it felt unfair that I had to squash 1.5x the work into the same space.

haha! my paws are crossed too!! The Fellow and I have collaborated very closely and both institutions have poured all their funding expertise into it - scored 91.2% first time, and now this is the 4th time we are submitting so even though it's great and had all the skill in the world poured into it, we still haven't got it, and really don't think we will this time. It really depends on whether the reviewers like the idea and last time we had NO weaknesses on impact, yet scored 4.7 (it scored 5 on previous occasions) - so no rhyme or reason to scoring. I wish everyone the best but be prepared for the REJECT in inbox as it can be very demoralising when you have spent 3 months of the last 4 summers working on it

The flip side is that whatever is NOT in your proposal can be turned into a weakness by the reviewers. I have seen a dozen reviewer reports and the most common comment is "this and that has not been elaborated enough" or worse, "the applicant COULD HAVE elaborated on their foreign language competencies/gender aspects of the research/what not in greater detail". Whenever there are no obvious weaknesses to pick on, there is always something that could have been there but is not. Well, there is a reason why this and that is not there, and the reason is word count :-).

Can you provide us please points for each element of proposal for all 3 attempts? Are they heavily different?
