Good point Shapovalov. I guess if you wanted to be quantitative about it, you would have to estimate the proportion of points afforded to the quality of the host institution and supervisor (which is distinguishable from you integration within it), and compare that to the increased liklehood of WF funding.

In all honesty, I think such strategizing doesn't make that much sense in the goal of overall increasing the quality of a research project. It's also detrimental to generalizing research excellence. You should choose the country and institution that is best suited for you, your career goals, your topic, and your individual research plan. This isn't always one of the 6 founding members of the EU, or a highly ranked institution. Researchers can be better integrated (and obtain better opportunities) into a smaller or newer institution from a lower research "excellence" country, than they might elsewhere. It just depends on you and your research. We're not all the same, and we shouldn't chase some universal, fabricated ideal of the "successful researcher". Just my two cents.

Yes, definitely.
All this discussion is only after the fact, while we wait for the near inevitable rejection*.

I am trying to move from one of the "top" EU countries in terms of research output to a Widening one, because I like the Professor and the group. He could give me a modicum of hope for an academic career. ( EF-ST ENG)

* After all, "first time applicants never get it", I was informed.

That's not true. I know lots of people that got it the first time. It is also true that their bosses wrote the application for them after knowing the magical formula (and also having a very competitive project).

According to the portal, the results will be out on February 11. Hopefully we can avoid the level of madness of last year!

It seems that this year they are in advance with the evaluation/report/consensus process. So I think we could expect the results by the end of January.

How do you know this? Keep in mind that this is how we went completely wild last year, speculation on speculation

A PI of my host who is a reviewer told me that compared to last year (they had some delays), they are on schedule.
