Visa length for MSCA in UK

Post by TheTams » Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:35 am

Has anyone done an MSCA in the UK on a global talent visa?
Did you get a 2 or 3 year visa?
They charge ~ 650 pounds per person per year for the NHS surcharge so I don't want to spend more than I have to. Its already looks like a £10 000 move for my husband and I - bit rough on a single postdoc salary the last few years...

Great question. I'm planning on getting a Global Talent visa. I dont know the answer to that. I can share something else.

It didn't cost 10,000 Pounds for a Tier 2 visa. I moved from the US to the UK on a Tier-2 visa in November 2020. It was about $2,500 for a two year visa (NHS and speedy decision included). But then, the flight + 15 day quarantine accommodation had me pay a good $2000 out of my pocket. I had to pay $2000 deposit + first month's rent for the apartment. Thats about $6,500 total = 4,500 GBP approx.

Guess what, I'm now paying NHS insurance out of salary (which is deducted monthly, on top of some stupid health surcharge). I cant for the love of my life figure out why we have to pay the stupid NHS surcharge if we are going to pay the NHS insurance out of our salary. It's a rip off.

There are two of us so double all those costs. ~£600 each for the visa, £600 each per year for the NHS surcharge, probably £2300 for hotel quarantine, £1000 for flights, £600 for a few things we need to send air, our other stuff will go by sea £1600 including arrival costs, £450 for mandatory covid tests (two each after arrival) and Covid tests here (no idea yet). Add the rent and deposit...

Hi there, I was reading the guidelines/handbook for 2020 call.

I found under institutional costs - "This amounts to EUR 800 per month and is managed by the beneficiary to contribute to expenses related to : costs for visa-related fees and travel expenses." Ask your host if the'll reimburse you at some point.

Oh, I will have to take a close look at that. I thought the 500 EU mobility allowance would be expected to cover it. The upfront payment would be great because its not that I think the MSCA salary isn't enough (its amazing compared to my current!) its just the 'all of that all at once' issue.
Thanks no42!

See if you can apply for a shorter visa, say 1 year and then once you start getting paid you can can extend it. It might cost you more (I dont know) but wont be all at once.

On that note, its actually very expensive. Even the question on the visa are not answered by anyone and suggest I talk to an immigration lawyer. They are more expensive than any of the visas I've applied put together !

Hi everyone,
I got MSCA fellowship this year. My family and I need to apply for the visa. Do you know which type of visa we have to apply for? My daughter is going to elementary school.
also could you please tell me if my husband is eligible to work there? Does he need a specific visa?

Hi,
I found this:
Costs will be reimbursed for the following incurred expenses:
UK Visa Fee
Initial NHS Healthcare Surcharge
Additional fees paid for fast-tracked visa processing
