MSCA RESERVE LIST 2021

Post by jw@cam » Mon Mar 21, 2022 6:16 pm

Hi all, maybe it is too early to talk about the MSCA projects funded from the RESERVER list, but I wanted to open this new thread to share knowledge and experience from previous calls and communicate status for the MSCA 2021.
Any discussion and information will be much appreciated!

Does anyone know how the reserve list works? I know there is reserve list for each panel and type (EF or GF). But do they eventually put all proposals in a list according to their score? My NCP told me that there will be two reserve lists one for EFs and one for GFs. It does not sound correct to me...

Also, do you think it is worthy to complain to the EC for the very high cut-off scores and the difference between cut-off scores between panels? We must ask to allocate some extra funding, at least to harmonize cut-off scores between panels.
We could ask the Marie Curie Alumni Association to support us and write something to REA about the very high cut-off scores and ask for extra funding. They have already complained about funding reduction: https://sciencebusiness.net/news/marie- ... 021-budget

Thank you for opening this thread! I'm on the reserve list in SOC with a score of 93.2. I was told by my NCP that there are over 20 people in front of me.

I'm on the reserve list with 90.2 in EF-PHYS, no idea what the cutoff is however. I expect there's like 20 people ahead of me, so I don't expect to be getting anything at all :|

From what I know they keep the reserve lists separate for each panel. Unless they changed the rules this year...

Yes, I think your NCP means that for each of the panels (e.g. LIF, ENV, CHE, SOC), there are two reserve lists one for EFs and one for GFs. As the number of funded projects for GFs is much less than that for EFs, for the same panel, candidates in GF reserve list are less likely to be funded off the reserve list. From last year's discussion, we can see even the top 1 ranked candidate in some GF reserve list failed to get funding:

http://www.talkacademia.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1158

Based on the statistics (https://www.horizonteeuropa.es/sites/de ... cticos.pdf), big panels (e.g. LIF/SOC) have a much larger number of funded projects. This in proportion gives rise to more dropouts, which makes the candidates in their reserve lists more likely to be funded. That is probably why we found top-ranked candidates in EF reserve list in big panels less involved in the discussion - maybe they didn't worry that much....

UPDATE (22 March 2022):

There were some high-ranked candidates discussing the reserve list, and some of them reported they finally got funded.

From the reserve list discussion in the 2018 thread for MSCA 2017 (http://talkacademia.com/viewtopic.php?f ... start=1470), I found:

1. The top 1 ranked candidate in the LIF panel got notification for grant preparation on Jun 29 2018.
2. A top 3 ranked candidate in the ST-ENG panel got notification for grant preparation on Oct 03 2018.
3. The 2nd ranked candidate in the IF-MAT panel got notification for grant preparation on Oct 25 2018.

Please report your case so we will know how the reserver list works.

Hi, thank you for creating this and for sharing useful information. I am in the reserve list for panel EF-LIF with a score of 94.2. I have contacted the NCP to try to figure out which is my position in the reserve list but I have not heard back yet. Hopefully we can have more information soon.
