No, this is if you get funded. If you get rejected you get nothing.Star@434 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 3:15 amHilifmc2020 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:45 pm“Researchers may, in agreement with the supervisor and beneficiary and with prior approval by the Research Executive Agency (REA), implement their project on a part-time basis. But the responsibility is part of the fun! I am in the CAR panel and have done other stuff with my life. I would love a research position (and especially to do this project), but other jobs can be fun and rewarding. I have many reasons I want to get the MSCA funding and would love this opportunity, but other things will come along and I would certainly not want to be a postdoc forever.mustdoit85 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:12 pmI agree 100%Diatosystem wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:08 pmI actually would love to be a permanent postdoc...the salary is not too bad, you can do great research and much less responsibilities then being a Professor...PetetheCat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:02 pm
But at some point you want to have some permanence, get a career progression and improve your salary, etc. The permanent postdoc life would not be fun.

I completely agree with you, PetetheCat, and I am in a very similar situation to yours.PetetheCat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 4:26 amBut the responsibility is part of the fun! I would add that the fact that some researchers actually prefer the “postdoc life”, which, yes, can be easier and fun, is the very reason why organizations have started to impose restrictions and limitations on who can apply – included, as we’ve discussed earlier, Horizon Europe for MSCA. I guess it has to do with the way one sees a postdoc – as just another research position, or as step that will prepare them for their academic / research career. If it’s the latter, then it is obvious why you cannot be a postdoc forever. PhD positions sometimes pay well, but we all agree that one cannot be a PhD fellow forever.

I agree but today you have no choice: either you go for a professorship after you postdocs or you quit. But I think you can do very good research and take your responsibility also as postdoc. The only difference is that you don't have to run an entire lab etc.trina_80 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 7:28 amI completely agree with you, PetetheCat, and I am in a very similar situation to yours.PetetheCat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 4:26 amBut the responsibility is part of the fun! Also, you're putting two different things on the same level imho..
The postdoc fellow is a professional, the PhD is part of your education. Of course you can't go for the PhD forever, but it's not true the opposite I guess

I agree that there are far from enough research positions and I, myself, have been personally affected by that. I also agree that you might not want to go for a teaching position (although teaching activities are often paired with research activities, they’re clearly very different). But as things stand now, many postdoc positions are not very different from doctoral positions, in the sense that they are seen as just another step in your career. They’re not meant to be lifetime positions. Unfortunately, we do not have too many alternatives and postdoc positions are often our only solution to continue to do our research. But, ideally, they would be just a gateway to a career in academia – whether it’s a teaching or a research position.Diatosystem wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 9:06 amI agree but today you have no choice: either you go for a professorship after you postdocs or you quit.
